SHA-512 Hash Generator
Generate SHA-512 hashes of text or files instantly. Verify checksums, sign messages with HMAC-SHA512 and hash lists line by line — powered by the browser's native Web Crypto engine, entirely on your device.

What Is SHA-512?
The largest member of the SHA-2 family, producing a 512-bit fingerprint.
SHA-512 maps any input to a 512-bit digest, shown as 128 hexadecimal characters. Like SHA-256 it is one-way and collision-resistant, but it works on 64-bit words, so it is often faster than SHA-256 on 64-bit CPUs while offering a larger security margin.
You will find it in Linux password hashing ($6$ crypt), Subresource Integrity (sha512-… in npm lockfiles), Ed25519 signatures, file checksums published by many Linux distributions and HMAC-SHA512 API authentication (e.g. crypto exchanges).
Text is hashed as exact UTF-8 bytes, so the result matches sha512sum, Python's hashlib.sha512, Node.js and OpenSSL.
Not for storing passwords on its own: a single SHA-512 is fast to brute-force. Use Argon2, bcrypt or scrypt, which are deliberately slow and salted.
Output Formats & Modes
Pick the representation your system expects.
Hexadecimal (128 chars)
The format printed by sha512sum and shown on most download pages. Use HEX for uppercase.
Base64 (88 chars)
Used by npm/yarn lockfile integrity fields and Subresource Integrity: sha512-<base64>.
HMAC-SHA512
Keyed signatures used by many trading and payment APIs. Tick HMAC and enter the API secret.
Hash each line
One SHA-512 per line for bulk hashing of lists — up to 100,000 lines.
How to Use the SHA-512 Hash Generator
Get your result in under ten seconds.
Type text or drop a file
Paste text to hash it as you type, or switch to File mode and drop any file.
Choose format and options
Pick hex, HEX or Base64. Enable HMAC with a secret key, or Each line for bulk hashing.
Copy, download or verify
Copy the hash, download a sha512sum-style checksum file or paste an expected value to compare.
Why Use the SHA-512 Hash Generator on Developers Web Tools
Fast, accurate and private — built for developers.
Private by design
Hashing happens locally via the Web Crypto API — your data never leaves the device.
Native & non-blocking
Hardware-accelerated SHA-512 with large inputs and files processed in a background worker.
Files up to 512 MB
Check ISO images, backups and release archives against their published checksums.
Checksum verify
Paste the expected hash in hex or Base64 and get an instant ✓ or ✗.
HMAC-SHA512
Sign API requests and debug webhook signatures with a secret key.
Compare algorithms
MD5, SHA-1, SHA-256 and SHA-384 of the same input are shown alongside.
Frequently Asked Questions
Both are SHA-2 algorithms. SHA-512 produces a longer 512-bit hash and uses 64-bit arithmetic, which makes it faster on most 64-bit computers. SHA-256 is shorter and more widely used. Both are currently secure.
No. It is a one-way function. The only way to find an input is to guess and compare, which is infeasible for anything other than short or common inputs.
Check for a trailing newline — echo "text" | sha512sum hashes the newline too. Use echo -n or printf. Line endings (CRLF vs LF) and encodings also change the result — text boxes always use LF, so use File mode to hash a CRLF file exactly.
Drop the file, choose Base64 and prefix the result with sha512-. That is the exact format used in package-lock.json.
Only inside a dedicated scheme like sha512crypt or PBKDF2 with many iterations. On its own it is too fast; prefer Argon2 or bcrypt.
No. Everything runs in your browser and nothing is stored after you close the tab.
