◆ ABOUT THIS TOOL

Why “Empty” Lines Are Not Always Empty

A line can look blank and still contain spaces, tabs, non-breaking spaces or zero-width characters — which is why simple find-and-replace often misses them.

Text copied from web pages, PDFs, emails, spreadsheets and code editors frequently picks up extra blank lines. Many of those lines are not truly empty: they hold trailing spaces, tabs, non-breaking spaces ( ) or invisible zero-width characters (U+200B, U+FEFF).

With Whitespace-only lines count as empty on (the default) all of those are detected and removed. Turn it off to delete only lines that are completely empty.

Choose how aggressive the cleanup is: Remove all deletes every blank line, Keep paragraphs reduces each run of blank lines to exactly one (and removes them at the start and end), and Only at start & end trims leading and trailing blank lines without touching the middle.

Line breaks are normalised to \n; a final line break is preserved if your text had one. Trim trailing spaces additionally removes invisible spaces at the ends of all remaining lines.

¶ MODES

Choosing a Mode

Example input: a title, two blank lines, a paragraph, three blank lines, another paragraph.

∅

Remove all

Every blank line removed — the lines are packed together. Best for lists, CSV and log files.

Keep paragraphs

Each run of blank lines becomes one blank line, so paragraphs stay separated. Leading and trailing blank lines are removed.

⇕

Only at start & end

The middle of the text is untouched; only blank lines before the first and after the last content line are removed.

␣

What counts as blank

Spaces, tabs, non-breaking spaces and zero-width characters (U+200B–U+200D, U+2060, U+FEFF) — or, with the option off, only truly empty lines.

No — non-blank lines are output exactly as they are, unless you tick Trim trailing spaces. Line breaks are normalised to Unix-style \n, and a final line break is kept if the input had one.

Yes. It works on any plain text: CSV, logs, Markdown, HTML, JSON, SQL or source code. For code, Keep paragraphs is usually the better choice because it keeps the spacing between blocks.

Files up to 50 MB can be opened; inputs over 256 KB are processed in a background worker so the page stays responsive.
