Show search engines where a page sits in your site — Home › Category › Page.
Breadcrumb structured data (BreadcrumbList) describes the trail of links from your home page down to the current page. Each step is a ListItem with a position, a name and the URL of that level (item).
Google can use it to show a readable path such as example.com › Books › Fiction above your result instead of a raw URL.
Status in 2026: breadcrumb rich results are still supported, but since early 2025 Google shows them on desktop results only; mobile results show just the site name and domain. The markup still helps Google understand your site structure.
The trail should reflect a typical path a visitor would take to reach the page — it doesn't have to copy your URL folders. Also mark up the main article or product on the page.
BreadcrumbList Requirements
From Google's breadcrumb documentation.
At least two items
A breadcrumb needs a minimum of two ListItems. Positions start at 1 and count up — this tool numbers them for you.
item URLs
Each item links to its page with a full, absolute URL. The URL of the last item (the current page) is optional.
Names users see
Use the same short labels as the visible breadcrumb on your page, e.g. “Books”, not “books-category”.
Several paths
If a page can be reached by different paths, you may add more than one BreadcrumbList. Use this tool once per trail.
