    ◆ ABOUT THIS TOOL

What Is the Open Graph Protocol?

The tags that turn a bare link into a rich, clickable preview card.

Open Graph (og:) meta tags were created by Facebook and are now read by almost every app that shows link previews: LinkedIn, X, WhatsApp, Telegram, Slack, Discord, iMessage, Pinterest and more. Without them, platforms guess — often picking the wrong image or a random sentence.

Four properties are required by the protocol: og:title, og:type, og:image and og:url. Adding og:description, og:site_name and image dimensions makes previews faster and more reliable.

X (Twitter) reads Open Graph tags as a fallback, but it needs its own twitter:card tag to choose the card layout — a large image card or a compact summary card with a square thumbnail.

Platforms cache previews. After changing tags on a live page, use the Facebook Sharing Debugger or LinkedIn Post Inspector to force a refresh. Preview images in this tool load directly from your URL, so they only appear for publicly reachable images.

    FAQ

    Frequently Asked Questions

The protocol requires og:title, og:type, og:image and og:url. In practice also add og:description and og:site_name for a complete card.

The URL must be absolute (starting with https://), publicly accessible without a login, and point directly to an image file. Some hosts block hot-linking. If it fails here, it will usually fail on social platforms too.

X falls back to og:title, og:description and og:image, but you need twitter:card to get a card at all. twitter:site and twitter:creator are optional attribution.

Platforms cache previews for days. Paste your URL into the Facebook Sharing Debugger and click “Scrape Again”, or use LinkedIn Post Inspector, to refresh.

The <title> tag is for search results and browser tabs. og:title is for social cards and can be more conversational, without the brand suffix.

Yes. Use the clean canonical URL without tracking parameters, so likes and shares from different links are counted together.
